The Guidance Center of Lea County provides services for intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) using the Matrix Model which is an evidenced based approach for substance abuse and dependence The intervention consists of relapse-prevention groups, education groups, social-support groups, individual counseling, and urine testing. Clients learn about issues critical to addiction and relapse, receive direction and support from a trained therapist, become familiar with self-help programs, and are monitored for drug use by urine testing. The program includes education for family members affected by the addiction. The therapist functions simultaneously as teacher and coach, fostering a positive, encouraging relationship with the client and using that relationship to reinforce positive behavior change. Intensive Outpatient program requires a minimum of participation in groups, individual, and family sessions for a minimum of 9 hours each week. The model was designed to occur over a 16 week period of time, but can extend beyond, dependent upon each individual’s needs.
